PRODUCT OVERVIEW

What Is A Protein Skimmer?

A Protein Skimmer is a supporting aquaculture water-treatment device that removes dissolved organic compounds and fine organic waste through foam fractionation. Fine bubbles create a gas-liquid contact surface; organic material attaches to the bubbles and rises as foam for collection and discharge.

It can be used in suitable RAS systems, hatcheries, aquaculture farms and professional aquarium systems. It complements mechanical filtration but does not replace a drum filter, biofilter or complete RAS process.

Typical fit: marine RAS, high-density seafood holding and professional aquatic systems. Freshwater suitability must be confirmed against water chemistry and project design.

FOAM FRACTIONATION PROCESS

How Does A Protein Skimmer Work?

The process separates dissolved and fine organic material by carrying it to the surface on fine air bubbles. Performance depends on water chemistry, gas-liquid contact, organic load and the project-specific operating configuration.

01

Water Enters

System water enters the skimmer reaction chamber.

02

Air-Water Mixing

Air-water mixing creates fine bubbles and a large contact surface.

03

Organic Attachment

Dissolved and fine organic molecules attach to bubble surfaces.

04

Foam Collection

Organic-rich foam rises and is separated for collection or discharge.

05

Water Return

Treated water returns to the filtration process or system.

PRODUCT FEATURES

Protein Skimmer Features for Aquaculture Water Treatment

PP/PVC Construction

PP body construction and PVC piping are positioned for corrosion resistance in aquaculture water-treatment environments. Exact material grades require order confirmation.

Automated Operating Design

The catalog describes a high degree of automation intended to reduce frequent manual intervention; routine inspection and maintenance remain necessary.

Large Gas-Liquid Contact Area

The vertical chamber design supports the gas-liquid contact needed for foam fractionation.

Organic Waste Separation

Foam fractionation targets dissolved organic compounds and fine organic waste that conventional mechanical screening may not capture.

Operation and Maintenance Access

The catalog positions the PP Standard configurations for convenient operation, maintenance and installation.

VERIFIED CATALOG PARAMETERS

Technical Specifications

The catalog provides model, equipment dimension and connection sizes only. Pump, air supply, electrical and hydraulic operating data must be confirmed before quotation.

Model reference: the number before the T suffix is a catalog reference for approximate recommended applicable water volume in metric tons. It is not an official flow-capacity rating and must not be converted to tons/hour, m³/h or GPH without engineering confirmation.

MODEL SELECTION

How To Select A Protein Skimmer

Model selection should consider total system water volume, marine or freshwater operation, species, biomass, stocking density, feed load, expected organic load, RAS process requirements and the available installation space.

Do not select by the T suffix alone. Final sizing should be reviewed against confirmed pump, air, hydraulic and water-chemistry data.

Information Required for Technical Review

  • Total water volume
  • Species and water type
  • Biomass and stocking density
  • Feed and expected organic load
  • Existing RAS process
  • Installation space and connections
  • Pump, air and electrical conditions

APPLICATION SCENARIOS

Aquaculture Applications

Protein skimming is application-dependent. Marine RAS and professional aquatic systems are the priority positioning; freshwater use should be confirmed according to water chemistry and system design.

RAS Aquaculture

Supports fine and dissolved organic removal as one treatment component where the RAS process and water chemistry are suitable.

Fish Hatchery

Can support organic-load management in hatchery water-treatment systems when the selected process and operating conditions are compatible.

Shrimp Farming

A potential application for suitable marine or brackish systems; salinity range, organic load and configuration require engineering confirmation.

Aquarium System

Relevant to professional marine aquarium and aquatic display systems that use foam fractionation for organic control.

RELATED EQUIPMENT

Related Aquaculture Filtration Equipment

A Protein Skimmer is one supporting component within a complete RAS filtration process. It does not replace primary mechanical filtration, biofiltration, oxygenation or project-specific engineering.

Aquaculture Drum Filter

Primary mechanical filtration for removing suspended solids before downstream treatment stages.

RAS Integrated Filtration Unit

An independent compact filtration unit that can support suitable RAS configurations; it is not a complete RAS system.

Submerged Mechanical Filter

Additional mechanical solids-removal equipment for suitable commercial aquaculture filtration layouts.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Protein Skimmer FAQ

A protein skimmer is a supporting water-treatment device that uses foam fractionation to separate dissolved organic compounds and fine organic waste. It is most commonly considered for suitable marine RAS and professional aquatic systems.
Water enters a reaction chamber where air-water mixing creates fine bubbles. Organic molecules attach to the bubbles, organic-rich foam rises for collection, and treated water returns to the system.
Not every RAS requires a protein skimmer. Suitability depends on water chemistry, species, salinity, organic load and the overall treatment process. It should be selected as one supporting component where project conditions justify it.
Provide total water volume, water type, species, biomass, stocking density, feed load, existing RAS stages, installation space and connection conditions. The T suffix is only a catalog model reference and should not be treated as flow capacity.
Mechanical filtration removes suspended solids such as fish waste and uneaten feed. A protein skimmer uses foam fractionation to target dissolved and fine organic material. The two stages perform different roles and may complement each other.
